Turmeric Milk/ Haldi Doodh ~ Masala Paal

My first food related post after transferring the blog to its new domain! On Saturday, once I got it done, I kept staring at the name several times... still not able to believe that I will not be seeing the old "http://sweettoothraf.blogspot.com" anymore and it is more or less like a website now! But whatever said and done, sometimes we need to take decisions to move our hobbies to our next level, but that doesn't mean that I stop being what I was. InShaAllah, hope to keep on with the same spirit...

I have been mentioning how I have been taking part in challenges to bring back my zest for cooking. So this time, I decided to be a part of the Shhh... Cooking Secretly Challenge, a brain child of Priya akka. You can find my previous challenges done over here! We are paired with a fellow blogger, who will give us a couple of ingredients to cook with. In turn, we also give them a couple of ingredients to work on their recipe. This time, I was paired with Lakshmi, who is my FB friend for sometime. We chat on and off and I have found her to be a warm person. I was really excited to be her partner, and I was even more excited when she gave me a pair of really easy ingredients - milk and honey.

The season of flu, cough and cold is on in the part of the world I live. Usually, January is meant to be very cold however this year it is different. The temperature is going nowhere to being cold and afternoons are unexpectedly warm. Explains why the clinics and pharmacies are super busy these days! The past two days has however been different. We have had some nice rains and very chilled days. As soon as Lakshmi gave me the ingredients, I had no other recipe in mind except this turmeric milk, that is so much a part of our Indian tradition, to be served when anybody gets sick. Actually, I never knew about it till my colleague P told me that she would give this to her daughter to ease her stuffed nose. That is when I started making this and now I feel you actually don't need a stuffed nose or clogged system to enjoy this drink! It has all spices that go into it and the soothing feature of turmeric helps to calm your system. It is also one of the best drinks to take when you are having a sleepless night. Off to the way I make it...

Turmeric Milk/ Haldi Doodh ~ Masala Paal
Serves 2

1 1/4 cup full fat milk
3/4 cup water
3/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/2 tsp ginger powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
1/4 tsp black pepper powder
1/4 tsp cumin powder
1/8 tsp nutmeg powder
2 cloves, crushed
3 tbsp honey (as per sweetness)

Combine all ingredients except honey into a saucepan. Keep on simmer till it boils. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the pan.

In a bowl, add the honey. Strain the slightly cooled milk over the honey and whisk till well combined. Serve into cups and devour immediately!

1. Adding a couple of strands of saffron along with the spices would elevate the turmeric milk to another level.
2. You can serve this with some sliverings of almonds or pistachios.

Curious to know what Lakshmi made with the ingredients I posed for her? Do check out her post!
